How does laser tattoo removal work?
Tattoo ink is injected about a millimeter into the skin, where it sits in chunks too large for the body's healing processes to carry away. In fact, our natural defense mechanisms are part of why tattoos remain visible for so long. The dermis, just below the outermost layer of skin, basically learns to live with the ink.
To remove a tattoo, a member of our team will treat it with lasers, which break the larger pieces of ink down into smaller bits that the clean-up cells, known as macrophages, can remove. Earlier versions of this laser only worked on black ink, but advances in technology have improved the process so it can work on a variety of colors.
Every tattoo is different, so there is no standard for laser tattoo removal. The time, number of sessions, end results, cost, and more depend on a variety of factors, including your skin type, the size and age of the tattoo, the ink colors, and the skill of the artist who gave it to you.

| FAQs | What will my skin look like after treatment?Right after your treatment, your skin will have a white discoloration, and the area around the tattoo may become reddish and appear swollen. This is normal and will disappear slowly over time. Results take about 5 weeks after each treatment. Immediately after treatment, antibacterial ointment and gauze will be applied to the treated area to minimize infection. Are there any side effects?Occasionally, a whitening of the skin may occur. However, normal skin tone should return within 6 -12 months following your last treatment session. Since the ink used in tattooing can vary from tattoo to tattoo, some patients have only partial clearing even after several sessions. What is treatment like?Some patients say they feel a slight sting, like the snap of a rubber band on the skin. Many treatments do not require anesthetics. However, some patients feel more comfortable with a local numbing agent, such as a topical anesthetic. How many treatments will I need?The number of treatments required for optimal results depends on the size, location, depth and color of the tattoo. Treatment should be performed 4 - 8 weeks apart in order to allow the body to remove the maximum amount of tattoo pigment after each treatment. Each session usually takes 10 - 30 minutes. You will continue to see lightening of your tattoo after each treatment as your body disposes of more pigment. Most patients will see improvement in their tattoos and results can be quite dramatic. |
